| The patient is a middle-aged Indian man who presented to CMC with complaints of extreme lower back pain. After imaging, the patient was found to have kidney stones. A blood test performed at the time of admittance indicated the patient had hypercalcemia. Due to the abnormal calcium levels a parathyroid hormone (PTH) test was done. PTH levels were elevated. He was diagnosed with primary hyperparathyroidism due to a parathyroid tumour.
Prior to the surgery, a sestamibi scan was done in order to identify the enlarged gland. This allowed the surgeons to perform a minimally invasive, direct parathyroidectomy.
The surgery was performed without any major complications.
Acknowledgments: We would like to thank surgery VI from the CMC for allowing us to shadow them in the OR. We would also like to thank the Gold Foundation, as well as Dr. Chandy for organizing our trip to India. |
