    Brief Description

This presentation discusses postpartum tubal ligation as a means of contraception in India. The patient is a 22 year old female who requested a tubectomy 2 weeks following the birth of a healthy, active girl (APGAR 9/10). The tubectomy was done. In India, female sterilization accounts for roughly 85% of modern contraception. The mother who underwent this procedure is very young (22) and a irreversible tubectomy can be devastating if any illness were to befall her two children. Despite this risk, tubectomy is still the preferred method of sterilization. Other forms of contraception (condoms, birth control pills and the copperT-380A intrauterine device) are used by only 7% married women.
